The Tower of Life is Born

Where some facilities seem to take forever with no signs real progress until the last few months before opening, there are a select few project’s in Disney theme parks that have highly unusual timelines. While Disneyland takes the cake with the seemingly finished Haunted Mansion appearing abandoned for six years (unintendedly adding to its mystique) , EPCOT Center’s closest equivalent is the Wonders of Life where the exterior was completely finished with landscape already well established as early as January of 1989 — a full ten months before opening. But that’s not even the strangest part, as from January til August, the pavilion existed without its focal point!

Notice anything missing ? ? ?

The pavilion’s iconic “Tower of Life” was either intentionally or accidentally delayed for many months, and even many well-known publicity photos (like the one above) were taken towerless.

Regardless of its fashionably “late” appearance (the Pavilion wouldn’t open until October 19th), this 75-foot tall sculpture inspired by the spiraling DNA molecule was an incredibly beautiful, futuristic and symbolically perfect addition to the Future World skyline!

Now that you’re the mood for some healthy entertainment, listen to the uptempo New Age atmosphere of Wonders of Life or experience the pavilion’s attractions with its Future World Soundtrack Series edition!
